How to dispose of roofing waste including tiles, felt and timber in Scotland.
Replacing or repairing a roof generates significant waste. Here's how to dispose of it legally and efficiently in Scotland.
Types of Roofing Waste
- **Roof tiles** (concrete, clay or slate)
- **Felt underlay**
- **Timber battens and rafters**
- **Ridge tiles and mortar**
- **Flashing and guttering**
- **Insulation**
Can Roofing Waste Go in a Skip?
Most roofing waste can go in our skips:
- ✅ Concrete and clay roof tiles
- ✅ Natural slate tiles
- ✅ Timber battens and structural timber
- ✅ Felt underlay
- ✅ Metal guttering and flashing
- ✅ Insulation (in bags)
- ✅ Ridge tiles and mortar
The Asbestos Problem
Older properties (pre-1980s) may have asbestos-containing materials:
- **Asbestos cement roofing sheets**: Common in garage and outbuilding roofs
- **Asbestos rope and lagging**: Around chimneys and pipes
- **Transite panels**: Used in some roof verges
Asbestos CANNOT go in any skip. It requires specialist removal by a licensed asbestos removal contractor.
If you're unsure whether your roof contains asbestos, have it surveyed before starting work.
Skip Size for Roofing Projects
- **Small garage roof**: 4 yard skip
- **Standard house roof (tiles)**: 6-8 yard skip
- **Large property or complex roof**: 8-10 yard skip
Note: Roof tiles are dense and heavy. A 4 yard skip is often sufficient in volume but may reach weight limits.
Tips for Loading Roofing Waste
- Stack tiles neatly — they pack more efficiently
- Load timber in separate layers from tiles
- Bag felt underlay to prevent it billowing
- Don't mix sharp materials with items that could be punctured
