A comprehensive guide to decluttering your Scottish home, including when to hire a skip.
Decluttering is one of the most satisfying home projects you can do. Here's how to do it properly, room by room, in a Scottish home.
Why Declutter?
Beyond the obvious tidiness benefits:
- Makes your home feel larger and more relaxing
- Makes selling or renting much easier
- Reduces cleaning time
- You may find items of value
- Mental health benefits of an organised home
The 4-Box Method
Before you start, set up four boxes/areas:
- **Keep**: Items you use regularly
- **Donate**: Good quality items for charity
- **Sell**: Items of value (eBay, Facebook Marketplace, car boot)
- **Skip**: Everything else
Room-by-Room Guide
Loft
The loft is usually the hardest room psychologically. Start here:
- Christmas decorations: Keep the ones you actually use
- Children's toys: Your children are grown — it's time
- Old electrical items: Mostly obsolete now
- Old clothes: 2-year rule — if unworn, donate
Kitchen
- Appliances not used in a year
- Duplicate items (how many spatulas do you need?)
- Old cookbooks and magazines
- Expired pantry items
Garage/Shed
- Tools you've replaced
- Old paint tins (dried out and useless)
- Sports equipment not used in years
- Broken items "waiting to be fixed"
Living Room
- Books (keep favourites, donate the rest)
- DVDs and CDs (convert to digital or donate)
- Decorative items you don't love
Bedrooms
- Clothes: Keep only what you've worn in 18 months
- Shoes: Be ruthless
- Old furniture: If it doesn't serve a purpose, it's clutter
When to Hire a Skip
Once you've gone through the process, the "skip" pile may be enormous. At this point, hiring a skip is the most practical solution:
- Volume too large for bin bags and car trips
- Mix of materials (garden, household, heavy items)
- Want to complete the clearance in one weekend
For a 3-bedroom house declutter: A 4-6 yard skip is usually sufficient.
For a full house clearance: 8-10 yard skip.
