Maximise your skip space and get the most from your hire with these expert loading tips.
Getting the most out of your skip hire means loading it efficiently. Here are our top tips to maximise your skip space and save money.
1. Break Down Large Items
Before putting anything in the skip, break down or dismantle large items where possible:
- Flatten cardboard boxes
- Dismantle furniture (remove legs from tables, break up wardrobes)
- Cut long pieces of timber to shorter lengths
- Break up large plasterboard sheets
2. Load in Layers
Think of your skip like a game of Tetris:
- Start with flat, heavy items on the bottom (soil, rubble, slabs)
- Fill gaps with smaller items
- Work in layers up to the fill line
3. Heavy First, Light on Top
Always put heavy items in first — bricks, soil, concrete. Lighter materials like bags of rubbish go on top. This gives a more stable load and prevents the skip from becoming too heavy at the top.
4. Don't Leave Air Gaps
Air gaps are wasted money. Fill every space:
- Pour soil or sand into gaps between bricks
- Pack smaller items into spaces between larger ones
- Crush cans and cartons to save space
5. Never Overfill
This is the most important rule. Never fill a skip above the top edge. An overfilled skip:
- Is illegal to transport on the road
- Is a serious safety hazard
- Will be refused collection by our driver
The fill line is the top of the skip — not above it.
6. Separate Materials if Possible
If you can keep materials separate (timber, soil, general waste), it can help with recycling and may reduce disposal costs for certain materials.
